"Jordan Garrick has worked for me in two capacities and has been outstanding in both.  Jordan is an excellent, experienced farrier who takes great care to get each individual horse shod correctly.  His angles are right and he always works toward a good, balanced foot.  Jordan is also a gifted horseman who can work with any variety of green or difficult horse, whether in the saddle or on the ground.  I have used Jordan to ride for me and run my facility while I traveled.  He effectively rode and worked with horses at several different training levels and he has a great way with people, whether they be his own clients or my students.  Jordan is extremely intelligent, patient, reliable, and hardworking. He is a gift to the horse world."

Sarah Clifford, trainer, Reserve National Champion in AQHA Ranch Horse Versatility;

Client Testimonials

"We first met Jordan when we moved with our horses to California. We were concerned about locating a good farrier; although many were available, we needed a farrier who could effectively provide therapeutic shoeing for our oldest horse. After Jordan's first visit, we were very impressed with his knowledge and forging skills."

- Koren Monroe, Salinas, CA.

1. What is a farrier?

A horse farrier specializes in equine hoof care, including trimming horse hooves, and, when needed, fitting, altering and placing horseshoes. You may also hear some people refer to a member of this trade as a horseshoer or a blacksmith; however, the trades are considered separate. Blacksmiths primarily design and build tools and work in architectural construction, whereas a professional farrier focuses on the care of horse hooves.

2. What does a horse farrier do?

Equine farriers are highly skilled professionals in horse foot care. They trim and shape horse hooves for optimal balance of the feet and lower limbs, using various tools such as rasps and hoof nippers, hoof knives, stands and clinchers, along with traditional blacksmith tools to shape and fit horse shoes, such as an anvil, hammer and tongs. Their primary work is hoof trimming and horseshoeing.

A farrier fits horseshoes on horses that have heavy workloads, work on abrasive surfaces, or have a special function in racing or other sports. Hoof hygiene -- which involves cleaning the feet, removing excess hoof walls and dead sole -- is an important facet of shoeing a horse. Domesticated horses may need shoeing since their hooves that are not as hardened or worn down like those of wild horses. Farriers may also apply shoes to improve a horse's gait and for traction on slippery or icy surfaces. The horseshoer as blacksmith removes old shoes, trims and cleans hooves, measures the shoes to the feet, bends and shapes the shoes to fit, and applies them. JG Horseshoeing uses hot forging techniques to properly bend and shape all of their horseshoes.

With correct trimming, a horse may go barefoot, that is, without horseshoes, over most types of terrain. A growing number of natural hoof-care experts, including Jordan Garrick of JG Horseshoeing, understand that an expert barefoot trim develops hardiness and resilience and allows for natural hoof growth. Trimming horse hooves for barefoot riding may enhance a horse’s health and comfort.

This trade also involves some veterinarian knowledge and skills of observation to watch for signs of lameness or disease, such as laminitis (also known as founder), hoof abscess, cracks, thrush and other hoof problems.

3. Farrier or ferrier?

The spelling in English is farrier with an “a.” However, the etymology of the word comes from the French word ferrier, spelled with an “e,” which derives from the Latin word ferrum, meaning iron; which in French means blacksmith.

4. How do I find qualified farriers near me?

If you have wondered, “How do I find expert horse farriers near me?” a Google search for “local horseshoers” or “farrier services near me” should bring you a list of local horse farriers in your area. Check their qualifications and recommendations carefully. Ask if they are AFA certified by the American Farrier’s Association –- the oldest membership organization for farriers in the U.S., and the only one with internationally recognized standards and exams.
